Wind the clock back to post-war Britain. Those were the days when “coming out” was something debutantes did, bobbies walked the beat, everything stopped for tea… and one of the most popular programmes on the radiogram was “Dick Barton: Special Agent”. With its exciting signature tune, Devil’s Gallop, and heroic deeds of derring-do, Dick Barton was the James Bond of the era. Each week millions tuned into this light entertainment show and listened as Dick championed the good, foiled the bad and ensured England remained forever spiffing! Now Hong Kong Players present Phil Willmott’s hilarious spoof of the show. The play opens with a BBC announcer delivering the devastating news that Dick Barton has been captured by arch-villain Baron Scarheart and asking: “What infernal end has the rotter in mind for our hero? Can he escape to once again protect the free world from the forces of darkness?”

Dick’s really got his work cut out this time: Not only are Scarheart and his dastardly Society of Evil Foreigners in London (EFIL) planning a cruel – and needlessly complicated – end to Dick, but sultry seductress and double agent Marta Heartburn wants to get her hands on him too. Can Dick’s endearing sidekicks Jock and Snowy help save the day? Will Scarheart and EFIL bring London to its knees? Will Marta manage to seduce our hero? Can England ever be green and pleasant again? There’s only one way to find out: tune into the next exciting installment of Dick Barton: Special Agent, playing at the McAulay in May!
