Rabbit Hole

Written by David Lindsay-Abaire

Where and When

McAulay Studio, Hong Kong Arts Centre
May 21-25 2008

Hong Kong Players is delighted to be presenting the Pulitzer Prize-winning RABBIT HOLE, by David Lindsay-Abaire.

“With Rabbit Hole, David Lindsay-Abaire has crafted the most serious, simply told work of his career—a painstakingly beautiful, dramatically resourceful, exquisitely human new play.” — BackStage.

Becca and Howard Corbett have everything a family could want until unimaginable tragedy up-ends their happy world when their four-year-old son Danny is killed in a road accident. Set in modern-day US, Rabbit Hole opens eight months after the accident and is a bittersweet, rich and often funny journey through grief and a family’s struggle to get back to the business of living.

The play, which won the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for drama, has been hailed as an artistic breakthrough for the highly regarded playwright David Lindsay-Abaire. A drama of what comes after tragedy, it captures the awkwardness and pain of thinking people faced with an unthinkable situation – and eventually, their capacity for survival.

Hong Kong Players’ production of Rabbit Hole is directed by award-winning Hong Kong director William Yip, a graduate of the HKAPA and director of more than 30 plays in HK and abroad.

What’s Cookin’!!!

Where and When

Fringe Theatre, Fringe Club
19-21 June 2008 (8pm)

Hong Kong Players is delighted to be mounting this co-production with Theatre de R & DWhat’s Cookin’!!! is a night of improvisational theatre that goes far beyond what audiences usually expect from improv. Thanks to the highly-honed sense of theatricality of director P. Adam Walsh and his mix of local and expat actors, the show leaps from comedy to drama and back, at a dizzying pace, in an unforgettable display of controlled anarchy.

Unlike other improv shows, the main focus isn’t on being funny and clever, but on intensity of real emotion – everything from deep belly laughs to tears, rage and terror. Adam is on stage throughout the show, reacting to whatever he sees from the performers and spurring them on to greater heights, prompting them to say and do things they didn’t even know they had in them. The traditions of the commedia dell’arte are combined with modern improv to create a dynamic, exciting show.

Audience participation is a big part of the night – the rowdier, the better – think Rocky Horror or panto, and then up it 12 notches. Musical director Wong Hiu Cho creates improvised soundscapes, from classical to punk, that build on the intensity of what’s going on.

If you’ve ever been to a show and thought “that was pleasant, but…”, this production will remind you why you started going to the theatre in the first place. What’s Cookin’!!!  was inspired by a series of workshops that Adam led in January and February of 2008 – those who observed the workshops were blown away by what they saw being generated spontaneously.

What’s Cookin’!!! is a chance to see the improvisation techniques that great actors and directors use to make their work so gripping. The show is different every night – boring isn’t an option!

To quote P. Adam Walsh’s directorial mantra, “at every moment, it’s better, or it’s worse… and it can change”.

Please note that this show may contain adult language and themes, and is not suitable for those under 16.
