Abigail’s Party

by Mike Leigh

Where and When

McAulay Studio, Hong Kong Arts Centre
26 Feb – 1 Mar 2014

Blurb

It was a time of kaftans, Cinzano Bianco, water shortages and Demis Roussos; it was a time when cheese and pineapple on sticks was considered exotic; and it was a time when England’s newly middle-class was emerging. They wanted possessions, they wanted standing in the community, they wanted . . . taste.

Welcome to the world of Beverly – possibly the original “Essex girl” – who is having some neighbours over to her suburban semi for a bit of a do. As well as Bev’s much put-upon husband Laurence, the guests are married couple Ange and Tone, and neighbour Susan, who’s only here to escape her punk daughter Abigail’s party. It’s a very small gathering, which might make for a cosy affair, but which also means there’s nowhere to hide.Watch movie online The Transporter Refueled (2015)Spring Breakers (2013)

Mike Leigh’s award-winning 1977 play is by turns hilarious and excruciating as it mercilessly sends up the aspirations of England’s new middle class. It gained cult status when it first came out and remains a perennial favourite. Under the inspired direction of Jodi Gilchrist (The Graduate, Pride & Prejudice), Abigail’s Party is guaranteed to bring both a grin and a grimace to your face.

Four dynamic workshops led by one of the stars of the 2007 Hong Kong Arts FestivalWatch movie online Logan (2017)

Actor/director P. Adam Walsh led participants in four workshops designed to free the actor.

JoshParticipants learned, in four 4.5-hour workshops, the basic principles of Commedia dell Arte and applied them to a contemporary style and method of acting compiled from improvisation, “state” work, and a series of exercises designed to allow and inspire each individual to be physically, emotionally, and mentally “open” and “free”. Participants learned how to make strong choices while engaged on the stage, and how to shed self-conscious constraints that hinder true artistic expression.

In all periods of Western culture since the Renaissance, Commedia dell’Arte has been a conscious or subconscious presence. Using sexually challenging language and physical comedy, Commedia pokes fun at elements of society’s respectable values by means of exaggerated styles and insightful character traits. The stock characters of Arlecchino (Harlequin), Colombina, il Dottore, il Capitano, il Magnifico (Pantalone), and Pulchinella can be found in music, visual arts, dance, and theatre as themselves or as inspiration for specific characters.

  • The workshops will offer directors a chance to consider and experience a number of rehearsal styles and pick up valuable tricks of the trade.
  • They will also offer actors the opportunity to see how they can make the best use of rehearsals, and give them assistance in making creative choices and collaborating successfully with their director and fellow actors.

Theatre workshops in a theatre – May, 2006

Workshop #1

Tuesday, May 2nd ( 7:30 – 9:30 PM ):

comedy-tragedy-masks-01
“MAKING IT REAL: Acting Advice from the Experts.”

There are some things you can’t pick up on the streets – you have to learn them in school. This workshop provides a handy toolkit of the many techniques that trained actors use to bring characters to life. If you’ve ever wondered what takes the “am” out of “dram”, this will be an invaluable chance to learn and practice the skills you’ve admired in stage and screen actors. We will explore a number of short texts, developing ways to go beyond “performing” a role and start inhabiting it.

The workshop leader will be HKP Chairman, Stephen Bolton, who has spent many years being involved (as an actor, a director, a producer and a writer) in numerous shows, and has spent nearly every dollar he earns on workshops, books and DVDs on the craft of acting.Watch movie online Get Out (2017)

“FUN WITH FILM SCENES”

We’ve all sat round the pub re-enacting our favourite moments from movies. This totally interactive, entertaining workshop is a fabulous chance to go a step further and explore what makes those sensational scenes so unforgettable.

We’ll be working with a carefully chosen collection of movie moments – covering a variety of genres, and ranging from those scenes you all know to some you won’t believe you’ve missed – and discovering how mere words on a page become pure magic.

This workshop can be enjoyed in its own right, or as an opportunity to show off the skills you honed at the previous workshop.Watch Cyberbully (2015) Full Movie Online Streaming Online and Download

“Saturday night at the movies” will take on a whole new meaning! Added bonus: HK Players being who we are, there is every possibility that we may all come full circle and, once the workshop is done, further explore these same film scenes in a hospitable venue nearby.

The workshop leader will be HKP Secretary, Adam West, who has acted in four Players productions (one of which he directed) and who is soon to appear in a Hong Kong art-house film. He may well be among those who go to the pub when the workshop is over.

Hong Kong Players is proud to welcome as our new patron. Star of stage and screen, Richard Griffiths, has become honorary patron of Hong Kong Players, a great honour for Hong Kong’s oldest theatrical company. Mr Griffiths agreed to become our patron after leading an acting workshop with Players on Sunday, 19 February 2006Watch movie online The Transporter Refueled (2015).

Around 40 people took part in the workshop, which was held at Spooky Hall, our rehearsal space in Ngau Tau Kok. About half were members of Hong Kong Players, while the rest had responded to our invitation, published in the SCMP’s City Seen, for interested parties to come and join us at the workshop. The response to that invitation was overwhelming, and regretfully for reasons of space we had to turn down many people, but we would like to thank them for their interest.

The theme of the workshop was The Lion in Winter, a play dear to the hearts of many people at Players (our 2003 production was stopped in its tracks by the outbreak of SARS, but the Lion will one day roar again!). Richard Griffiths proved a friendly and erudite host, sharing invaluable acting tips with participants, as well as regaling us with anecdotes and spot-on imitations of Marlon Brando, Lucky Luciano and The History Boys author, Alan Bennett. After the workshop, Richard was happy to stay and chat with participants, while enjoying a wee sip or two of wine.

He later said the day had been his most enjoyable in Hong Kong, and expressed the desire to return again in the near future. We wish Richard every success in the Sydney and New York runs of The History Boys.
